Review movie 'LUV'
Woody lives with his uncle Vincent and grandmother without mom. Uncle Vincent were just discharged from the jail, and he tries to start business for a new life. One day, Woody goes out house with his uncle, and his uncle Vincent tells Woody that he will teach how to be a man to Woody. So, Woody follows his uncle Vincent, but uncle Vincent makes Woody to embroil horrible moments in his life... Critique: It was very sad to watch until the end. Vincent tried to live out better life, but because of people around him, he could not escape from his past. Moreover, he was bad uncle for his nephew Woody. To Vincent, Woody was what he all god. However, he made Woody embroiled in dangerous situations such as gun rampage, drug dealing, and then made him watching his death. Due to him, Woody might have to live in trauma for rest of his life. If he were truly loved Woody, then he should have to survive and raised him instead of Woody's mom. Vincent "I'm all you got" I could feel Vincent's mind that thinks about his nephew Woody. However, it was wrong way to lead his nephew. Due to his wrong choice and made Woody to embroil in bad situation, Woody might have to live in trauma. Vincent "People I thought I trusted, man, I can't trust." Every thing that he had known was changed after he was discharged from the past. His family-like person 'Fish' tried to kill him, and his ex-girlfriend married other guy. Finally, to him, the only person that left next to him was Woody. Vincent "There was a time your word meant everything to me." Vincent's deep rage comes out from this part. The person that he used to follow like his older brother betrayed him and attempted to kill him through other person. America is the dream country to which all people want to go. So do Koreans. Since Koreans have seen a lot of Hollywood movies the American lifestyle that shows off to Koreans is Americans are rich; there are a lot of good-looking blonde girls; cities like Los Angeles and New York are everywhere; and there are gun rampages everywhere. However, the reality is really different than what I thought. People here have similar life like most of Koreans; there are not many pretty blonde girls; not all the cities were like Los Angeles and New York; and there are not as many gun rampages as I expected. Therefore, I was quite disappointed about America since life here was way different from the scene of Hollywood movies. What I discovered from America was people’s mindset is way different than Korea.
First, all the people in America are respected even though their age and status are low or young. In Korea, for example, kids cannot say any thought that is opposed to adult, or even in the workplace, the relationship of top and bottom is formed by their status. Thus, subordinates lose their right to opine their thoughts, and they have to just obey what bosses direct. However, not necessarily but, people in America know how to respect others. For instance, from the article “The Baking Concept of Education (Paulo Freire)”, he insisted the importance of interaction between students and teachers, and he said that teachers also learn from the conversations with students. Freire argues that teachers also respect their students. However, since grew up in a culture that there is an obvious top and bottom relationship among students and teachers, so it was very impressive to me. Second, in Korea, people want to show off their status. For example, how rich they are, what school they graduated from, and what kind of job they have. In addition to that, schools also stress that people who enter good universities are the winners in life. Therefore, Korean students are the slaves of study. However, American people or students here are more focused on how they will live happy lives for themselves not for others as showing off their status. Moreover, although people here do not know much about Korea, they know Korea had the highest rate of plastic surgery which is quite shameful. Korean people have very high criteria in aesthetics as well. Thus they want to show be prettier for showing their appearances to others, but people here do not put much worth on their appearance. Rather, people try to see through one’s kindness and personality. Third, gender equality was well set. I think Korea is one of the countries which have very absurd gender inequality. Since we were patriarchal society, women have a lot of wrong expectations on men. For example, Korean women’s ideal type of Korean men is person who is 6’0” tall and salary 60 grand. And then, even for women, there are limitation in promotion, and men expect them to be pretty and young, while American society consolidates their partners with personalities. It feels ashamed about my past criteria in choosing my partner, and also I hope Korea would be changed. Not all Korean people act like I have written, yet it is mindset that widely spread through Korean society. I hope Korean people will change their mindset not only following Americans’ lives that are displaying through Hollywood movies. Recently, what I think about is the criteria that divides between underdeveloped and developed country is “how mature their citizens’ mindset is.” If wealth is the only source that measures whether Korea is developed or not, Korea is highly developed. However, our mindset is still left in 19th century. Korea has been experiencing recession in economy and politics. Unless, people have fixed mindset in what I mentioned. Koreans cannot be more mature and never will be able to be developed like the United States that most of Koreans envy. · Who did I work with to compose my academic mindset project? Was this a good approach?
I worked with my tutor, and then it was a really good approach since I could revise my draft. · What was the most difficult part of my writing process? Why? What did I do to overcome the obstacles? My biggest obstacle in writing process was grammatical errors, and sentence structures. It is because I have a lot of deficiencies in English. To solve this problem, I have to read more books and write more essays. ·When did I write this project? Good approach? I did when I had to rush with other assignments. It was bad since I had to finish this assignment in very limited time. Therefore, I could not think much ideas. ·Where did I write this project? Good approach? I wrote this on my Microsoft Words first. Mostly, it was good to write on word. However, it is bad since all my spaces did not adapt in my blog like I did on word. Therefore, I had to rearrange all spaces. · Why did I choose to write about my chosen topic? Throughout my case, I wanted the other students would be encouraged. Moreover, it is true that not all the things become true as we hoped, however, nothing would be come true among what we did not hope. · How will I adapt/revise my writing process for future revision of the academic mindset assignment? [Be specific. Review your current six-step writing process plan and consider posting a new six-step plan.] I will bring my assignments to tutors so that I can get a feedback. In addition to that I will bring it to professor from time to time for inspecting that my essays are going into a right way. 1.Select a film that is under two hours and is available on Netflix or Amazon.
Provide the title of the film. The title should be linked to its IMDB page. The Terminal (2004) Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, 128minutes http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362227/?ref_=nv_sr_1 2.Write a summary of the film. Victor Novarski (Tom Hanks), a man who came from Eastern European country Krakozhiaa, came to JFK. However, while he was in the plane, his government is collapsed so, including his visa and all documents became invalid. Therefore, he stuck in the airport. He had to learn English since he had to survive, and he faced several problems such as food, shelter, and clothes in the airport. Since, it is based on one Iranian guys’ real story whose name is Mehran Nasseri, this movie has more reality compared to other movies, and related to Syrian refugee problem, it is good movie to have a discussion about. 3.Provide possible writing topics for assignment #3. We can think about several topics like ‘what is the meaning of mother country to us’, ‘what if I become a diplomatic refugee like ‘Victor’ due to the collapse of my country's government?’, ‘sense of difference that we feel when we are in other countries’, ‘how do we have to consider about diplomatic refugees such as Syrian refugees or North Korean refugees who chose flee because of political issues of their countries.' According to 'Noncognitive Report' by Chicago University, there are four types of mindsets: I belong in this academic community (Belonging); My ability and competence grow with my effort (Growth Mindset); I can succeed at this (Self-efficacy); This work has value for me (Relevance/Purpose). First I belong in this academic community is that students sense they belong to classroom or school. Second, my ability and competence grow with my effort is as Carol Dweck's 'Growth Mindset', students believe that their abilities are gradually growing by putting efforts. Third I can succeed at this is about that students have confidence or believing likelihood that they are successful at study. Lastly, this work has value for me is students consider that study they are doing is relevant to their lives or feel interests.
Many people have their own mindset that makes them studying more though. I personally demonstrate more ability when I feel sense of belonging to the class. For example, I really love to study Korean History, and also I liked my history teacher since he was cool. Therefore, even though I was really bad at study when I was in middle school, always I got ‘A’s in Korean history. My personality is odd, so when I do not feel any sense of necessity to study or belonging in class, my motivation to study also plummets hard. However, as much as I interact with my professor, and when he or she gives me good feedbacks, I get a good motivation to study. Moreover, I feel strong connection with those professors’ classes, I always do more works even though I do not have to and try to be prepared before their classes. Moreover, to not lose my motivation, recently, I have been more interactive with my professors than I did in the past, therefore I feel fruitful when my professors kindly answer me and give short compliments. It does not only influence me but also it affects other people. From the Korean documentary about education, I saw the middle school students in Finland. Finland education, evaluated as one of the best educations in the world, was very impressive. They did not move to chapter unless everyone in classroom understands. According to teachers of that middle school, it is for surging students’ sense of belonging in classroom that they are members of classroom. Likewise, always not only to me but also to everyone else, sense of belonging becomes motivation to everyone and it returns into good result. Therefore, even when someone in our group make problems in doing group activity, the only way to lead that troublemaker in our group is make him or her feel the sense of belonging to our groups. Dale Carnegie said “human’s one of the most fundamental instincts is acknowledged by other people from his one of famous books titled ‘How to win friends influence people." Therefore, to me when I feel the sense of belonging to my class, I think I am acknowledged and thus, become more enthusiastic. As I had observed my growth in Math, I started to believe growth mindset. My teachers called me a ‘spastic’ since I could not understand what they explained to me. Therefore, I even regarded myself as an idiot in math no matter how I was brilliant in other subjects. However, I experienced significant growth in math so, I am teaching math to my friends from time to time in this college. As Carol Dweck presented at TED talk, brain really rearrange our way of thinking, when people keep facing with hard problems which people cannot solve. I am one of those cases which obtained acquired math talent. Before, I took a college entrance exam in Korea, I usually got half of incorrect in every other math tests. However, when I tried really hard for a month, after the result I got was impressive. I got only three incorrect out of 30 problems.
Therefore, no matter how math is hard, I believe I can get over it. Even though from time to time, new notions of math are extremely hard, I try as many time as I can, so that I will get used to it. As long as I have overcome with my weakest part, I begin to not give up easily. Moreover, this mindset contributes a lot in solving math, because half of people who cannot solve math problems are usually being scared even before they try. However, I try to solve one problem as many times as I can, until I do not know what to do anymore. Therefore, I can say I accomplished success because of my patience in solving hard problems. It thrills me, when I think my math how I got better than before, thus it is valuable for me to invest my times in solving hard problems and stick to math. Some people tell me I am smart since I teach my friends math. However, I think different. I do not consider myself as a smart person. I just achieved successes in math because I attempted to the extent that I got a certain degree of skill. It is just about believe their own potentials and keep trying hard or not; and if people experience good grades in their exams or sense their improvements in math, they consider solving math is valuable for them and start to make math as relevant to their lives. I was called as an idiot to all my math teachers, and especially my math teacher from my high school told me succeed my mom’s restaurants since I am not smart enough to study even though my dream was lawyer. However, as overcoming prejudice, I am proving that I can do math to everyone who said no to me. It stands for everyone else can do it!! I hope people who are bad in math will be encouraged by my words . One of the biggest current issues in America is who will be the next president between two main candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. To the extent that this election is unprecedented, it is fierce. Each candidate brings up about each other’s weaknesses, and nobody is innocent Hillary Clinton has an email issue, and people call her a liar. Moreover, people who supports conservative party hate her with the reason that she is not trustworthy and she will waste their taxes by offering welfare to everyone. However, my opinion is when Donald Trump becomes a president everything will be messed up and he is not an appropriate person for the next president.
It is because his words always cause disputes about racial problems and gender discrimination problems. For one of the immigration policies, he is trying to make a wall at the border between Mexico and the U.S. to deter influx of Hispanics. However, in my logic, it is incomprehensible to prevent immigrations in the country which is their citizens are immigrants. Especially, his some of speeches show us that he is not qualified to become a president. For a while ago, he visited Harvard University, for consortium. At the consortium, he severely denounced Korean Government as saying Korean Government does not pay for U.S. base in Korea. However, one brave Korean American student from Harvard whose name is ‘Joseph Choi’ quietly rose up and opposed to him as saying the fact that Korean Government pays 860 million dollars for American base per year. So, Trump could not repute about what Korean student said. Except this, Donald Trump attempts to take back the U.S. Armies from abroad including Asia. As one of the powerful candidates say words without any facts, people who do not know anything about the purpose of the U.S. army bases in Asia insist that they should take their soldiers back. However, there are side effects happen when American Army retreat from Asia right now involves a lot of risks. There are two serious side effects. When U.S. army retreats from Asia and North Korea starts war against South Korea, by Domino Effect:a situation in which one event causes a series of similar events to happen one after another, including South Korea, few other countries can become socialism country or communism countries because of North Korea and China. When oppression against North Korea is loosened and finally disappeared from Asia, North Korea and China will try to expand their effect through whole Asia. The reason that the U.S. put 1.7 million soldiers to protect Korea was Korea was the last fortification of Democracy. At that time, when South Korea is collapsed, by Soviet Union and China, Japan could be also Communism country so, including the U.S. and U.N determined to dispatch armies to guard Democracy. However, if North Korea will start a war against South Korea, by side effect South Korea can be changed into communism or either socialism, and the effort that United States attempted to protect democracy with their soldiers’ sacrifices becomes nothing. China will be the strongest power by displacing United States’ position. Recently, the U.S government tries to oppress military expansion of China by dispatching their armies to Korea and Japan. Typically, China’s economic sanction against South Korea is stereotypical example of that China oppresses Korea and U.S. Terminal High Area Altitude Defense (THAAD) system is a projectile interception system that is preparing for North Korea’s nuclear bomb attack. South Korea is setting up THAAD because of the U.S government’s strong recommendation. However, China thinks that THAAD system will be an obstacle of their military action, because they worry that their military action will be observed by THAAD raider, thus they are strongly objecting against and tries to make Korea giving up THAAD by giving sanctions to their economy. It is also silent riot against the U.S. Currently, China is investing vast money to displace the U.S.’ throne. At this point, if the U.S government retreats their Army back, it is obvious that China will be the strongest power in Asia and the world. Like this, there are a lot of benefits in dispatching U.S. Army to many countries. It oppresses war; it keeps world peace; and it stops China’s military expansion. Moreover, in maintaining the U.S. bases many allies are putting a lot of resources and dispatching their soldiers to supply and support the U.S. Army. So, Trump’s words that the other countries do not pay for maintaining U.S military base is totally erroneous and his most of words are extricate to the extent that it will spur World War III. I am not saying he is foolish person, he is rather very bright in economics and he is a successful person, yet marketing is totally different from politic. By his actions so far, he does not seem to have an essential requirement for the president. He is causing conflicts between ethnic groups and he tries to weaken traditional alliances with other countries which fight for world peace together. I do not know about politics very well, but it is obvious when he will become a president, he will destroy everything that the U.S. achieved. Therefore, I think Donald Trump should not become a next president Harvard student's arguement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw3uBLOUwfU I was treated for anxiety a while ago in Korea, so I thought it got better. Recently, however, I feel like I meet the biggest obstacle in my life; grade. Therefore, my anxiety disorder recurred due to the stresses of my grades. The results of my tests did not come out as I intended, so I am quite stressed and worried about whether I can go to my college or not. I feel like I am an idiot more than I thought, and I even doubt my talents that I used to perform very well. People say something like “try to achieve something very steadily.” It never seemed valuable to me. Before, I looked down a person who underperformed in study since I could get quite good grade and without an effort. However, the words that people told me is valuable to me now. I recognized that motivation, mindset to try more, and process to the way of achieving success are more important than our grades because sometimes we can get really bad grades due to lack of motivations and wrong processes.
I learned the difference between growth mindset and fixed mindset, which are two different perspectives of intelligence. Fixed mindset is the view that considers that intelligence is fixed, but growth mindset which is supported by Professor Carol Dweck thinks intelligence is increasable by our effort. I was quite sarcastic about the growth mindset that intelligence can be improved. However, even if it is quite controversial that we can achieve and be better only with effort, I support this theory now. No matter how hard we try sometimes, results can be bad and also, in my case, I easily get distracted by my anxiety that I might fail. So, intelligence is not only a factor that contributes to our grades, and there are some theories and facts that I saw that support growth mindset. First of all, according to my psychiatrist, when people try to think in certain ways, neurons recalibrate the way of thinking. In short, it is possible to be better in math when we think about hard problems because our brains find new ways of learning. Second of all, the research that was conducted by Angela Duckworth from the University of Pennsylvania and a few other professors, tried to improve one’s intelligence, 40 ~60 percent was successful. Lastly, Carol Dweck said when researching the brain of students with growth mindset and fixed mindset, the brain of students of growth mindset was more heated and activated than those of students with a fixed mindset. Of course, there is some theory like ‘what percent does effort contribute to work’ by University of Michigan: Ann Arbor which was saying that only 4 percent of effort influenced success in study, while 96 percent is simply intelligence. However, they did not consider about how important our process and motivation are. Obviously, it is true that there is still limitation even with our effort, but if we are going to try with better process, and if we are more motivated than we used to, I believe a lot of things are changed. Thus, I also believe Carol Dweck who insisted on growth mindset theory in terms of reminding us how important it is to be motivated and focused on the right process with our effort. Research from the University of Pennsylvania that conducted by Angela Duckworth: www.psychologicalscience.org/index.php/publications/observer/2011/july-august-11/improving-intelligence.html Write an introduction that summarizes these two texts:
The difference between two article is the article from Carol Dweck supports Growth Mindset in nurturing children, and also educators should encourage their students with growth mindset. On the other hand, the other article that is written by Alfie Kohn is stressing that being obsessive with neither the growth mindset nor fixed mindset is not helpful and he is insisting that stressing curriculum is more important than just mindsets Explain the differences between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Both mindsets are related to the view of intelligence. Fixed mindset believes that intelligence cannot be changed, therefore, no matter how we make an effort, there is not improvement. However, growth mindset believes our possibilities of improvement in intelligence. Believers of growth mindset, thus, does not be ungracious with their failures. Rather, they enjoy and keep their challenge, until they achieve their goal. Discuss if you consider yourself to have a growth or fixed mindset as a college student in your academic environment--or, depending on the context, if you have a combination of the two. I personally acknowledge that there is an inborn intelligence that we cannot get over with our effort. For example, no matter how we make an effort, we cannot become an another Edison. Edison said "Genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration." (quoteinvestigator.com/2012/12/14/genius-ratio/). Edison said this word to say that not everyone can be a genius even if they try hard. However, in my perspective, this word seems we can become an acquired genius who is lacked of only 1 percent of 1 inspiration. That is, the ordinaries can get close to geniuses by putting efforts. Obviously, there is a gap we cannot overcome, but rather than being depressive and kneeled down by our imaginary wall, putting an effort and making a gradual progresses are more productive. |
